Course Objective

The OHS Act aims to establish a comprehensive health and safety team to support management in achieving compliance and objectives. The team works to uphold high standards of compliance and effectiveness across the organization. By involving more employees in understanding and implementing workplace health and safety, the approach fosters collective responsibility. Health & Safety Representatives contribute to inspections, risk assessments, and investigations, serve on the OHS committee, and provide feedback to management and employees.

Course Outcomes

    • Sections of the OHS act pertaining to the representative, their functions, and the quarterly health and safety committee meetings, which all members must attend
    • The duties and functions such as conducting quarterly workplace inspection and other functions of the representative and their appointment letters
    • Introduction to incident investigations and hazard identification risk assessments, which will be part of the representatives’ important functions upon returning back to the workplace
    • A practical component allows the learner to conduct a walkabout with a check sheet in a controlled environment and assess the workplace for any health and safety related concerns or non-conformances, to be discussed at the next health and safety committee meeting
